Last Race Coming Up

Well the last race of the year is in just 4 days!

No Nonscents will be heading out to Calgary on Saturday to compete.  After this race we will be dividing into 2 teams! So exciting.  It means more races for the dogs !
The new team will be known as Full Of Nonscents and will have experienced as well as new dogs on it.

After much deliberation the Full of Nonscents team members were decided and will compose of ...
Brit, Karma, Mazie, Catch, Luna & Epic !!!

2014 will be a great year!

New Scenthurdle Dog Excellent Title !!

 LUNA & Gord made their debuts & what a great debut it was!  Luna did one perfect run & was only mildy distracted in her other runs by all the craziness in an actual race.  Gord managed to keep his cool as well & was a great partner for Luna.  Terri made her debut as assistant box loader & even did a race on her own, thanks Terri!! This is NOT an easy job!

We ended the night in 2nd place, great job team!!

What we did....

 Well first we sang Happy Birthday to Kim who was celebrating her Birthday :)  We had yummy Crazy Cakes cupcakes too :)

We went right into racing, splitting up into 2 teams & changing up the running order a number of times.  The dogs are all doing so well, making very few mistakes, it should be fun in Lethbridge!

We talked later about another race coming up in January at Spruce Meadows.  We could go for both nights, Fri & Sat, but there was some worry about not having anything to do all day Sat. when waiting for the race.  We still have some time to decide if we are going to go up for both, or just one race.  Also we will be racing as 2 teams at that point.

I'm getting behind in my blogging!

Practice this past Tuesday was a good one, we raced our dogs to & from the box  hoping for more speed & excitement from them, especially running "to" the box.
We sat & watched passing to try & cut time there if we could, wouldn't it be great if we had a race under 35 seconds!
We had a look at individual dog points to see who was close to titles.
We took a quick vote to see if anyone was interested in going to the individual race in Calgary on Dec 14, looks that that is a go as long as the weather holds up!

Racing dogs for Lethbridge have been decided....

Lastly we voted on changing our practice night to Thursday, this will start after the Lethbridge show,
that's about it!

Practice Night

Hey!!! that's my dumbell!!

Wow what a crowd we had last night! Everyone was able to make it, so nice to see!

We talked for a bit about the split in the teams, while it would be awesome if we could all stay on the same team it wouldn't be realistic.  There are too many of us now, & if we don't split in to 2 teams we will not get very many races per dog.  We are trying to makes the teams equal, with some experienced dogs, some newer dogs, we think it works, guess we'll find out next year! It won't be perfect, nothing in life ever is, but we'll make it work.  We will still be one team in heart and offer full support for each other no matter what team we are on :)

We started out racing pretty much right away, 2 teams , changing up the running order so the dogs were always running against another dog.  Most handled it without a blink, some dogs still need more work on being reactive to certain dogs, & sounds.

We learned there may be only 3 team in Lethbridge, such a bummer that in our own city we can't draw enough teams, what it means for the dogs running is they may only get 1 or 2 races tops, sucky but a reality.

We talked about the Independent race next year in Calgary, 2 tournaments there, a great opportunity to finish up some titles!! Kort, Bosley & Pixel are very close to their Scenthurdle Masters Titles.  Catch must be getting close to his first title of Scenthurdle Dog!  Tina & Jethro , Maureen & Crawford, Roberta & Karma, may be close to their Scenthurdle Excellent titles, so exciting for all!!

Next practice will be Tuesday, same time, same place, 7ypm, at Paws On The Run, see you there!!

Practice at Cowley

This morning a bunch of team members travelled out to Cowley for a practice.  It is worth traveling for the hour to have a new venue for the dogs to race in , as well as racing against another team.

Making the trip were Amanda & Pixel, Gord, Terri & Luna, Jolene & Kort, Roberta & Karma, Tina & Jethro, Shauna & Catch, & Donna , Epic, & Swift.

The dogs did well for the most part, still some difficulty with some dogs not taking every jump or crossing the line, but all in all a great practice.

The star today was Luna, who has come leaps & bounds, making no mistakes today which earned her the right to race in Lethbridge, & to get an official number of her very own!

Congratulations to Gord & Terri for all your dedication & hard work, and to Luna, Number 2 !!!

We had a full house tonight & it was great!  Started off the bat racing , nothing fancy.
At the end we played the find it game. We all put our dumbells in the center of our circle, Amanda added some toys, extra dumbells, & a food bowl.  Some of the dogs just couldn't resist the toys, mostly the newer dogs who haven't been playing for long.  It was fun to see them thinking though!

We had a nice relaxed practice tonight, we worked on getting our butts out of the way so the next dog & handler has room to run, plus faster passing at the line.

We did some fun snatch & grab games at the box as well, racing our dogs back.

What a rush that night was!!!

We had 5 races and we won each won! & by alot!!  Not one dog made a mistake , not one!! It was amazing, sooo proud of the team.......

Tonight's Practice

 What would Scent practice be without a storm looming?  Thankfully we were able to get in a good practice before the thunder & lightning started!

What we did:

Tonight we started with the one & only new dog present Luna.  We let Luna have some fun running the jumps to the dumbbell & then back with Gord.  Later we back chained doing 1 jump to the box, 2 jumps to the box & so on.  After Luna aced that she did discrimination on the box & was 3 for 3 with a full box of X's even! Luna is coming along very nicely!  Catch stepped in to help give Luna someone to race with as well.

Later the racing dogs ran with our guest, Shannon, with her dogs Piper & Keeper providing distractions.  Even with Keeper playing tug right beside the racing dogs they aced it!!

We feel pretty confident going into the races at Spruce Meadows this weekend :)

Lethbridge Race

My oh my what a night!!!

The team was all over the place, wrong dumbbells, dogs crossing the line, chasing other dogs lol!, not scenting, taking a couple of jumps then just coming back , geez louise!
It also became very clear that we need to have a boxloader "only" position!  Someone who will just come out & box load & not race.

Then there was the hail storm, holy cow what a storm it was!  We ended up having to end the races early so we could pack up & get safely into our vehicles, what a night!!

That being said we still managed to pull out a few races that we ran well & most of us came home with more points.

Huge congratulatuions to Sarah & GYP who got their SCENTHURDLE CHAMPIONSHIP!!!!

3 New Titles!

We had our Scenthurdle Race this past Saturday in conjunction with our obedience/rally trials.  It was so nice to be home to race!

There were only 4 teams & 3 races but No Nonscents came away with 2 wins & only 1 loss. 

Getting new titles at this race were 3 of our newer dogs......

Congratulations to CRAWFORD & KARMA who now have their Scenthurdle Dog tiltes!!
Congratulations also to BRIT who earned her Scenthurdle Dog Excellent title!!!

Our next race will be in 2 weeks here at home again & in conjunction with our Agility trials.

Independant Race in Calgary

Yesterday our team headed to Calgary for our first Independent race, yippee! , held at Dignified Dogs.
Our team did amazing, losing only one race out of the five & coming in second place overall.
Crawford & Karma made their debuts & were awesome!

Tomorrow we are attending our 2nd race of the year but it is our first independant race, that means we don't have to wait around all day long for Best In Show to be over.  We are starting at 10:30 am & will be finished by 1:15, how fun is that!
Tonight we raced in the dogs in the teams  that we will be racing in tomorrow.  We did a bit of rearranging to find the best order for the dogs, both Kort & Crawford are not the best going first.  Bosley runs faster going second for instance.
We had a couple of races under 40 seconds which was awesome!
Roberta & Karma, & Maureen & Crawford, will be debuting as well, whoo hoo!! 
Shauna is box loading so we are all set & ready to race!!!!

What we did...

We started out with the newbies running a full 4 jumps to the box, we just started with their own dumbbell on the box.  Luna is still catching up so she did 2 jumps to the box.
Later we set up some barriers so the new dogs learned to make a smaller circle after the box, insuring that they didn't swing wide & miss taking the first jump.

The racing dogs just did their usual thing & had no difficulties. Kort even managed to take his jumps even though a certain Sheltie joined him & ran with him lol!

Only a couple of weeks to our  race!!!!

What we did....

The racing dogs started out by being sent to the box to retrieve their dumbbell among distractions.  Amanda had food ( in a container ), fluffy toys, squeaky toys , boxes of crackers on the ground,  you get the picture!

Then we ran 2 lanes at the same time, with the racing dogs on one side & the newbies on the other.  Maureen & Roberta held the dogs while we called them over the jumps.  On the racing side we had the dogs held at an angle so they had to move over to take the jumps, some of the dogs found this to be a touch more difficult at first .

The new dogs worked on going to the box to retrieve their dumbbell .

We ended by doing a scent circle , putting all the dumbbells in the middle, with the experienced dogs going first, then the newer dogs, all did very well!! Good job !!

What we did...

We started out with the newbies doing some restrained recalls over the jumps. the team members did a one jump, one dumbbell retrieve with the owner running away before the dumbbell was even picked up, we are going for more speed!

We then worked 2 lanes with the racing dogs doing a full box race at the same time the newbies were doing running for the box with a food bowl on it.  It was very loud & distracting for the racing dogs, with the newer dogs sometimes crossing the line to see the racing dogs, & the racing dogs crossing the line to visit the food bowl ( Kort ! )

The newbies started to work on sending to the box with one jump & one bell, with the cardboard division on it to help them learn to check each spot for their bells.

It was a great practice & the new dogs are coming right along!

Today's Practice

We had a practice today, first one since February.  The dogs did well considering it's been awhile since most of us trained!

We had our 2 lanes set up & did a few runs, changing up the dogs running order.  We used the newer dogs & handlers as distractions in the one lane.  They ran with their dogs over the jumps the first time, then called their dogs to them over the jumps the second time.  The racing dogs took it all in stride & didn't bat an eyelash :)

Next practices will be held on Wed nights, at 7:30, for the month of April, till then, keep practicing !

Today we had Bobbi come out with a few of her flyball dogs to provide our dogs with some much needed distractions.  Flyball dogs are very intense, fast & loud.  Our dogs need to be able to think with distractions & still do what is required of them.  All the dogs did really well!! 
Kort struggled with the fact that there were new dogs there & lost his brain, but recovered eventually, the other dogs didn't even notice !

Calgary Race

Well we had our first race of the year!  It was interesting to say the least lol!!  
Each dog was  happy to be running, although they all had their times of being a bit "off " shall I say :)
Boxloading was hilarious!!! Each of us, with the exception of Amanda, had blond moments of "umm , what are we doing exactly?? " 
We all had fun though & kept up our team spirit.  We do have lots of things to work on when we get back training!
