We just found out that Maize came home from the Calgary Scenthurdle Race with her SCENTHURDLE EXCELLENT title!!!!

Independant Race in Calgary

Yesterday our team headed to Calgary for our first Independent race, yippee! , held at Dignified Dogs.
Our team did amazing, losing only one race out of the five & coming in second place overall.
Crawford & Karma made their debuts & were awesome!
Thank you to Shauna who came down just to box load for us.

Ready To Race!!!!

Tomorrow we are attending our 2nd race of the year but it is our first independant race, that means we don't have to wait around all day long for Best In Show to be over.  We are starting at 10:30 am & will be finished by 1:15, how fun is that!
Tonight we raced in the dogs in the teams  that we will be racing in tomorrow.  We did a bit of rearranging to find the best order for the dogs, both Kort & Crawford are not the best going first.  Bosley runs faster going second for instance.
We had a couple of races under 40 seconds which was awesome!
Roberta & Karma, & Maureen & Crawford, will be debuting as well, whoo hoo!! 
Shauna is box loading so we are all set & ready to race!!!!

What we did...

We started out with the newbies running a full 4 jumps to the box, we just started with their own dumbbell on the box.  Luna is still catching up so she did 2 jumps to the box.
Later we set up some barriers so the new dogs learned to make a smaller circle after the box, insuring that they didn't swing wide & miss taking the first jump.

The racing dogs just did their usual thing & had no difficulties. Kort even managed to take his jumps even though a certain Sheltie joined him & ran with him lol!

Only a couple of weeks to our  race!!!!

What we did....

The racing dogs started out by being sent to the box to retrieve their dumbbell among distractions.  Amanda had food ( in a container ), fluffy toys, squeaky toys , boxes of crackers on the ground,  you get the picture!

Then we ran 2 lanes at the same time, with the racing dogs on one side & the newbies on the other.  Maureen & Roberta held the dogs while we called them over the jumps.  On the racing side we had the dogs held at an angle so they had to move over to take the jumps, some of the dogs found this to be a touch more difficult at first .

The new dogs worked on going to the box to retrieve their dumbbell .

We ended by doing a scent circle , putting all the dumbbells in the middle, with the experienced dogs going first, then the newer dogs, all did very well!! Good job !!

What we did...

We started out with the newbies doing some restrained recalls over the jumps. the team members did a one jump, one dumbbell retrieve with the owner running away before the dumbbell was even picked up, we are going for more speed!

We then worked 2 lanes with the racing dogs doing a full box race at the same time the newbies were doing running for the box with a food bowl on it.  It was very loud & distracting for the racing dogs, with the newer dogs sometimes crossing the line to see the racing dogs, & the racing dogs crossing the line to visit the food bowl ( Kort ! )

The newbies started to work on sending to the box with one jump & one bell, with the cardboard division on it to help them learn to check each spot for their bells.

It was a great practice & the new dogs are coming right along!

Today's Practice

We had a practice today, first one since February.  The dogs did well considering it's been awhile since most of us trained!

We had our 2 lanes set up & did a few runs, changing up the dogs running order.  We used the newer dogs & handlers as distractions in the one lane.  They ran with their dogs over the jumps the first time, then called their dogs to them over the jumps the second time.  The racing dogs took it all in stride & didn't bat an eyelash :)

Next practices will be held on Wed nights, at 7:30, for the month of April, till then, keep practicing !
