We had a great practice this afternoon.
We were joined by Judi & her dogs Drummer & Token, Sharlet & her dog Ryder, & Deb who was box loading today.
It gave the dogs some new distractions, new dogs & lots of noise to work in.
The team is coming along super & starting in January we will be officially competing!..yikes!

Halloween Practice

We managed to sneak in one more practice today as we won't be having another one for about a month.
Tea showed us how hard she had been working & was flying across all 4 jumps to retrieve her dumbbell, way to go Julia & Tea!!
We basically worked on our passing & doing everything as if in a trial. We even had a whistle blown to start the race!
Next practice will be Nov 28, 2-3 pm.

What We Did:
We worked really hard tonight :) We were able to set up 2 lanes with 4 jumps for the first time thanks to Judy's amazing husband! He made us a set of jumps & they are gorgeous! Kim is taking them home to paint them & make them all pretty :) Thanks Kim!
We started off by placing a food bowl out at the end of the jumps, the dogs only got their reward if they took all 4 jumps. It wasn't long before they were all speeding up to the bowl.
We did some more distractions while the dogs raced...Liz had a stuffed toy & threw it up in the air & let it drop as the dogs ran by... I know Roxy & Kort couldn't resist , and maybe Bosley, but every one else did well.
It was wonderful to see Betty taking the jump & bring her dumbbell back over. Zydeco was super focused & also took his jump each time & brought the dumbbell back. Crawford is coming along very quickly, retrieving & bringing back his dumbbell quickly, he is working on being a quiet corgi too ! :))
We found out that we can "shadow" people during the scenthurdle races in Lethbridge at the end of Nov...this way we can see what each job consists of up close & personal.
And super exciting news....we may be able to practice with the other 4 teams after the official races in Lethbridge. This will be just fantastic for the dogs as well as the new handlers!
We have had to change our practice day to Sundays due to the start up of agility practice again.
All in all a great night!

Distractions

What we did:
Tonight we worked with distractions on both sides of the jumps, toys, food bowls etc. Each dog went off course to check out the new stuff laying on the floor!, (all except Pixel that is!!) Much more work on this in coming practices!
We worked on passing more effectively so we won't loose any time in matches to come. It became obvious tonight also that some dogs can't go last or they don't want to work LOL! (Kort!)
This is actually interesting to me, Kort totally rocks it if he is first, just don't put him last, he thinks that is boring !

Tonight we worked at the box only, we split up into 2 groups & trained to get our dogs to search each square. We also worked on getting them to walk "around" the box, rather then through it or on top of it :)( Pixel !) We put a pail in the middle of the box to encourage the dogs to go around it.

What we did:
Tonight as usual we started with some scent discrimination on the floor. We then split up into 2 teams & worked with a full box for the first time! All the dogs were amazing, we are coming along great!
3 of the dogs, Crawford, Zydeco & Betty, are not quite ready to race yet. They worked on sending over the jumps, & Zydeco worked on retrieving on the box with 1, then 2 dummy dumbbells. They are really catching on quickly & will be ready to race with us in no time!!
Liz brought out one of the vests she is making for the dogs to wear, we all tried it on our dogs, they looked so cute :))

Outside Practise

What We Did:
Seeing as this was a new environment, & outside we did some basics.
We started with hiding the dumbbell & asking the dog to find it.
Then we did some scent discrimination using 2 dumbbells, it was a bit harder for the dogs to focus as we were outside with alot of distractions, & there were lots of yummy smells in the grass!
We did restrained recalls over 4 jumps, then went into the retrieving from the box. The dogs did super for the most part but you could see they were not quite as dependable in this new environment. All the more reason to keep challenging the dogs in new places.

What we did:
We worked on discrimination on the flat, first using 2 dumbbells, then 3.
After we went to the box, we started with 2, then 3, then finally 4 ! The dogs are doing great !!
It sure is fun to see them carefully sniffing & looking for their dumbbells!
We also had a discussion on team "uniforms". We have decided to go with vests & the colour will be black with a red logo.
The dogs will have black with red piping & red numbers! We should all look pretty spiffy :))

Back To Practice

April 8th Practice

What we did
Sending up the line to the box with a food bowl on it. This worked great to give the dogs confidence to race to the box and back to us. Pixel is the only one still missing the first jump. :o)
Sending to the box with a dumbbell with two jumps.
Sending to the box with a dumbbell with four jumps.
We started both of these exercises by running with the dog, and built up to just sending them alone.
Ended on discrimination- again everyone is doing a super job. It's neat to see the wheels turn when the dogs accidentally grab, or sniff at the wrong dumbbell. We had LOTS of success last night with this.
Next time we are going to work on just Box Work- teaching the dogs to check all four spots by going around the box and not through the box :o) This will make our box loader a little happier.
More discrimination- we will work on the flat but with four dumbbells set out in the layout of the box. Once the dog is solid we will move to the box.
More jumping- we need to get our dogs to chase us back down the line and encourage more speed on the way back. Some dogs still need to work on turning back to the jumps off the box. (PIXEL!)
We've also decided that November will be our first official race. I will start the paperwork in the next few months.
Oh- and our box and dumbbells arrived and will be painted and ready to go next week! We are meeting on Thursday the 15th at 7:40.

NEWS!!!
As a group we chose a name and team colors. We are going to call ourselves No Nonscents! Jolene came up with the name and we all thought it was super cute. We also chose Red/Black as our team colors with Red being the main colors.
I have the box ordered, and jumps are being made. I also have everyone's dumbbell sizes so I can order those aswell.

Huge Improvements all around!!! We were able to get a lot done today and everyone did an awesome job.

Recalls over 4 jumps- we are getting lots of speed and confidence now.

Practice #1
We had out first ever Lethbridge Scenthurdle practice!
